What size chain fits the Hiplok AX1000

The Hiplok AX1000 is designed to be used with a D-lock rather than a chain. However, the anchor does feature an opening measuring approximately 37mm × 63mm, which does allow the use of smaller security chains, such as our Protector 13mm chain.
How the Hiplok AX1000 is intended to be used
Hiplok states that the AX1000 is designed to be used with a D-lock to secure a motorcycle directly to the anchor.
In theory, this simplifies the security setup by removing the chain entirely. However, in the real world this means that a lot of riders would only have the option of securing a wheel, often their front wheel, depending on the size of their D-lock, to the AX1000.
Why riders may still look to use a chain
In practice, many motorcycles:
- Do not have a suitable frame point that aligns cleanly with a D-lock and anchor
- Have wheels, swingarms, or bodywork that restrict D-lock positioning
- Are easier to secure effectively with a chain routed through the frame or swingarm.
For these reasons, we get enquiries from riders exploring whether a short chain can be used with the AX1000 despite it being designed primarily for D-locks.
What the AX1000 opening allows
The AX1000 includes an opening intended for a D-lock shackle, measuring approximately 37mm high × 63mm wide.
Using our Protector chain internal link dimensions:
Protector 11 mm: Will fit
Protector 13 mm: Will fit
Protector 16 mm: Will not fit
Protector 19 mm: Will not fit
Because the opening is not designed for chains, link orientation and chain stiffness matter, and larger chains are impractical.
Important limitations to be aware of:
- The AX1000 is not designed or optimised for chain use
- Using a chain may restrict positioning and ease of locking
- Larger, heavier chains are not suitable for the available clearance
- If a chain is used, it should be considered a workaround, not the primary intended method.
Summary
The Hiplok AX1000 is designed to be used with a D-lock rather than a chain. That said, the anchor’s 37mm × 63mm opening allows the use of smaller chains such as 11mm or 13mm, depending on link orientation.
Larger chains (16mm and above) are not practical with the AX1000. Riders considering a chain should be aware that the anchor is optimised for D-lock use, and chain compatibility is limited.
