Video: How to fit different locks to your chain

Updated on Oct 13, 2026

This video provides advice and good practice on how to correctly use various locks with our Protector security chains. It ight all sound a bit obvious but we have included some advanced techniques that may not be obvious to everyone.

Can I lock the end of the chain to a link in the middle?

On suitable long-link chains, an end-link can pass through a mid-chain link and be secured with a compatible lock. This allows you to make a smaller loop without cutting the chain.

Move the sleeve to expose the chosen link where possible. If the sleeve needs an opening, contact us for advice on the best position and how to prevent fraying before cutting it.

This method does not work with every chain design. Check that the lock closes fully on the protruding link and that the complete arrangement cannot pull apart.

Can I join two chains to make a longer arrangement?

It is possible with a suitable lock and compatible chain ends, but check the complete connection before buying. The lock must close correctly, and the joined chains must not be able to pull apart.

Do not assume that a noose ring will accept another chain's end-link simply because both chains have the same nominal gauge. Link shape, end-link size and the available locking clearance all matter.

Two Noose chains can be joined by sliding the normal link through the noose link on the other chain. Then the two oversized rings will sit together.

If you are joining two standard chains, this can often be achieved using a Roundlock. You would thread one chain link through another link in the other chain, then secure this with the Roundlock. You can secure two chains of the same gauge or you can also secure a 13mm chain with a 16mm or 19mm chain, locking the Roundlock to the 13mm chain.

Send us the exact chain sizes and designs, the proposed joining lock and a photograph or sketch of the arrangement. We can help check compatibility. Remember that the additional connection introduces another component whose security and fit need to be considered.
