Can I move a ground anchor or take it with me when I move house?

Updated on Oct 13, 2026

Whether you can move an anchor depends on its design and how it has been installed. We advise that you buy a Double Doofer ground anchor if you will need to move the anchor in future. While it is technically possible to remove our other ground anchors, it is very time consuming and you will likely damage the anchor or substrate when removing it.

Which anchor is designed to be removable?

The Double Doofer is designed to be removed and installed in another suitable position. Its two-part construction allows access to the fixings when the chain and cover are removed in the intended way.

Follow the Double Doofer instructions for removal and installation, including the correct adaptor arrangement for your chain. A new fitting kit is needed when installing it in a new position.

Can I remove a Torc Mega or another permanently fitted anchor?

Permanent installations are intended to make access to the fixings difficult. Removal may damage the fixings, anchor or mounting surface, and should not be treated as a routine unbolting job.

It is a big job to remove a Torc Mega once it is in situ. If you are moving house, we would advise you leave it as a gift for the new owners and purchase another anchor.

What if I live in rented accommodation?

Check permission before drilling or making permanent changes, and agree what will happen to the installation when you leave. A removable anchor can make moving easier, but it still needs a suitable structural surface and leaves fixing holes behind.

If you cannot install an anchor, consider whether there is an existing suitable fixed point you are permitted to use. Linking bikes together can make them harder to lift, but it does not provide the same level of security as securing them to a strong fixed point.

What should I check at the new location?

Check the surface, the correct fitting kit, chain clearance and the complete chain route before drilling. An anchor that worked at your previous property may need a different position or length of chain to satisfy your situation.
