What thicknesses of security chain is best?
We produce three different chain gauges; 13mm, 16mm and 19mm. All of our chains are made from the best materials and are then put through a hardening process to make them even more secure.
The best thickness chain depends on your circumstances, your budget, what you are securing and where you are securing it.
Our 19mm chain is as tough as some of our rivals’ 22mm chains but despite being lighter than a 22mm chain, we don’t recommend this as a portable option. It is just too heavy.
Our 16mm chain is a very good portable option for scooters, as it can be easily carried in the underseat storage compartment.
Our 13mm chain is much more portable and is a great deterrent. It’s easy enough to carry on a bicycle or motorcycle and enables versatile locking options.
Our thickest chain, the 19mm, can be tricky to pass through the most secure part of your vehicle and therefore a 16mm version might be a better choice, if, for example you can thread this through the frame of your motorcycle, rather than just the front wheel (a front wheel can be removed fairly easily by a competent thief, if they are given enough time).
The following table shows the weights per metre for each of the Protector chains and the normal maximum length we can supply:

This should give you a better idea of the size, weight and portability of our security chains and help you choose the best option for your needs.
